EL SALVADOR WAS THE FIRST COUNTRY TO MAKE BITCOIN A LEGAL CURRENCY
Bukele, 41, has been on the agenda frequently in September 2021, when the cryptocurrency Bitcoin began to be used as a " legal currency " in his country.
The government had installed ATMs of the Chivo digital wallet, which allowed the cryptocurrency to be converted into dollars and withdrawn without commission, as part of preparations for the use of Bitcoin as legal currency. The government also announced that $30 worth of Bitcoin will be given to everyone through Chivo Wallet to encourage the use of Bitcoin. The plan, led by Bukele, aims to enable El Salvadorans to save $400 million a year, mostly spent on remittance commissions from the United States.
